The website

awnet.jp was where members checked records, changed settings and spent points. It changed a lot in three years, and only its public pages were ever saved.

Five versions

When	What it looked like
September 2003	A special site for the AM Show, at `/am/pc/`. Only people who had used their card at the show could log in, and it closed on 17 September.
December 2003	The launch site: a frameset with picture-button menus down the left, a narrow login box, and Guilty Gear Isuka on nearly every page.
28 April 2004	A full redesign, announced on the news page. Membership, FAQ, support and the site map all moved to new layouts. This is the version the reconstructed AW-NET site is based on.
Late 2004	Kintaro's visitor site opened on 4 October, and NEOWAVE's event pages arrived.
2005–2006	Victory Furlong and NeoGeo Battle Coliseum got their own portals, each with members-only channels.

Logging in

The early login box sent your AWID and password to menu.cgi, in fields named aid and pas.

Members-only pages included each game's detailed records, character settings and the shop. NeoGeo Battle Coliseum, for one, showed non-members only the top ten of its rankings. None of those pages were saved by the Wayback Machine, because it couldn't log in. What survives is the public side: news, help, FAQs, rules, rankings, venue lists and adverts.

How the site was built

Different parts of awnet.jp used different technology, which shows in their addresses:

The central site and Isuka used CGI scripts (.cgi).
KOF NEOWAVE had its own set of CGI scripts.
Victory Furlong used PHP and static HTML.
NeoGeo Battle Coliseum used a Java servlet: servlet/exe/Index_p?COM=....

The terms of use asked for Internet Explorer or Netscape on Windows or Mac, or Safari 1.0 or later, plus the Flash plugin. The front page's banner was a Flash movie, and the FAQ asked for JavaScript and cookies to be switched on.

Daily maintenance ran from 04:00 to 05:00 in 2004. Victory Furlong and NeoGeo Battle Coliseum later list 04:00 to 06:00.

The phone site

AW-NET Mobile ran on mobile.awnet.jp. It handled sign-up, card registration, the AWID and password, and phone extras such as wallpapers, ringtones and Victory Furlong's daily race lottery. Phone pages weren't saved, apart from one page from November 2003, a month before launch, telling visitors their handset wasn't supported. That page is titled AW GGX Mobile, the name of a Guilty Gear phone service announced in August 2003. How the two services related isn't known.
